Victor's 1959 Cafe

The last thing that I ate was the Bistec Criollo from Victor's 1959 Café in the Kingfield neighborhood. Lime and garlic marinated steak with diced peppers and onions - it's a must to order over rice, with 2 eggs over easy. There is just something about the rich egg yolk mixed with the tangy lime that get my taste buds moving. Not to mention the accompanying fried yucca in some kind of lime sauce- well balanced and tasty.

This meal almost ritualistically has to start with an appetizer of mango pancake. Literally the soft and fluffiest pancake ever- it's enhanced with a sweet mango compote and a dollop of whipped cream. You can have the pancake as your meal, but with all the delicious options, we make sure to always have it as a brunch appetizer.

A side of platanos maduros is also a requirement. On at least one order - make sure to substitute in on the bread option the Cuban toast and do add the guava jam. The toast is crispy and buttery and is enhanced by the sweet and fruity guava.

We've only been to Victor's for brunch- it's a small space, nearly doubled in size during Minnesota's warmer months with outside seating. Make sure to arrive early on the weekend, or you'll likely face a long wait. Not to worry early risers- the Cuban coffee will wake you up, and potentially put hair on your chest. The staff is always friendly-  sporting some kitschy T's "Eating with the Enemy," and "No embargo, no problem," are amongst my faves. The Bistec and Mango pancake are undeviating regulars and we're working our way rotating in the other choices to find the heavy weight two punch combo of brunch favorites to split. Today's contender was the Poached Crab cake. I have to say the crab cake was one of the best I've ever had- full of tasty crab, warm, soft and delicate tasting. The tomato based creole sauce is not to my liking- but the crab cake absolutely shines through.

Overall I'd advise to make sure to put Victor's at the top of your list, next time your looking to try something new for brunch.
